In a noteworthy development, Visakhapatnam Airport gears up to offer round-the-clock flight operations, effective April 1, following the completion of a crucial runway resurfacing project. Spearheaded by INS Dega, a pivotal entity in the region’s aviation sector since 1999, the project concluded ahead of schedule, earning accolades for its quality and efficiency.
The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) headquarters confirmed the resumption of 24×7 operations, marking a significant stride in catering to the burgeoning demand for aviation services in the bustling metropolis. The resurfacing initiative, aimed at bolstering the airport’s efficiency and safety, was prompted by the escalating traffic, averaging 75-80 movements per day, over the past 15 years.
Originally inaugurated in 2007, the runway’s extensive 10,000-feet stretch facilitates the accommodation of wide-bodied aircraft, a crucial aspect in modern aviation. Despite facing delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project surpassed expectations, showcasing commendable efforts by ENC headquarters.
To mitigate disruptions to commercial operations, meticulous planning was executed, aligning the resurfacing work with the winter schedule of civil aviation. Notably, over 30 flights were accommodated beyond regular hours, even during exigent circumstances like Cyclone Michaung, underscoring the commitment to minimising inconvenience for Visakhapatnam’s residents.
The successful completion of the runway upgrade underscores a significant milestone in Visakhapatnam Airport’s evolution, promising enhanced capacity and efficiency in serving both domestic and international flights.
