UP approves proposal to develop for heliports for tourism

The UP Cabinet approved a proposal to develop heliports in four places to boost tourism. A proposal to this effect was presented by the UP Tourism Department and the Cabinet approved development of the projects on PPP basis, reports Shailvee Sharda for TOI.

Briefing reporters, Departmental Minister Jaiveer Singh said: “Cities to have a heliport include Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mathura and Agra. In Lucknow, the heliport will come up at the Ramabai Rally Ground.” He added that the heliports will create job opportunities as well.

Experts said that a heliport is a small airport suitable for use by helicopters and some other vertical lift aircraft. Designated heliports typically contain one or more touchdown and lift-off areas and may also have limited facilities for fuel or hangars. In some larger towns and cities, customs facilities may also be available.

The Union Tourism Ministry has already laid down a detailed policy for heliport tourism. “With a view to promote tourist destinations, the ministry of tourism has issued guidelines to extend financial assistance to state governments/Union Territory administrations for construction of heliports under the Scheme of Product/ Infrastructure Development for Destinations and Circuits,” reads an official document on the issue.
