Madrid has emerged as a top choice for Indian travellers, witnessing a 73% growth in visitors from India in 2023 compared to the previous year. The Community of Madrid welcomed 57,435 Indian tourists last year, a figure that also surpasses pre-pandemic levels by nearly 20%. The region’s appeal lies in its blend of culture, sustainability, and safety—qualities highly valued by Indian travellers, who are increasingly exploring the city’s gastronomy, luxury shopping, and art scenes.
To celebrate this growing connection, CAMARA MADRID hosted the “Madrid A 7 Star Destination” evening in Mumbai on November 26, 2024. The event attracted key stakeholders from India’s travel trade and media, showcasing Madrid’s unique offerings tailored to Indian preferences. Indian tourists, known for their high spending power and cultural interests, spent an average of EUR 2,430 per person in Spain in 2023, contributing to a total expenditure of EUR 584.8 million—a 67% increase from 2022.
Madrid’s tourism boom has been fueled by direct flights from India, streamlined visa processes, and cultural links strengthened by Bollywood’s iconic film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. This momentum continues into 2024, with a 17% rise in international arrivals during the first half of the year. The Indian market, in particular, remains a focus, as upper-middle-class travellers seek urban destinations, luxury experiences, and family-friendly options.
As Madrid reached an all-time high of 7.8 million global visitors in 2023, Indian tourists stood out for their significant contribution. With forecasts predicting double-digit growth in spending in the coming years, Madrid’s bond with Indian travellers promises to grow stronger, cementing its status as a top European destination for the Indian market.
