India’s inaugural Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is set to commence from Uttarakhand, marking a milestone in the country’s emergency response capabilities.
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced this initiative, emphasising the deployment of a helicopter at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. This helicopter will be on standby to airlift individuals within a 150 km radius to the medical facility in case of accidents.
The HEMS operation, operating under the project ‘Sanjeevani,’ is currently in the process of assembling and certifying the designated helicopter for this critical purpose. Minister Scindia underscored the importance of this service by stating, “Assembly and certification of the helicopter to be deployed for the purpose is underway. It is on my dashboard. It is entirely my concern now not yours.”
This initiative reflects a concerted effort to enhance emergency medical services and improve access to timely healthcare for those in need across Uttarakhand.
