CSMIA witnesses 108% recovery in passenger traffic in August 2023

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) continues its growth trajectory in terms of passenger traffic for the month of August 2023. Fuelled by its excellent connectivity and world-class infrastructure, the airport observed 108% recovery in passenger traffic in Aug’ 23, as compared to Aug’19 (pre-pandemic). CSMIA continues to affirm its leadership in aviation excellence with an upward trend in both domestic and international passenger numbers, solidifying its prominent position in India’s aviation landscape.

In August 2023, CSMIA recorded passenger traffic of over 4.32 million, with a growth of 32% as compared to August 2022 (3.2 Mn). International passengers at CSMIA alone witnessed a strong 33% growth with more than 1.1 Mn passengers travelling, in comparison to 0.84 Mn same period last year. CSMIA witnessed a total of 20,711 domestic ATMs and 6,960 international ATMs in August 2023, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of the aviation industry.

Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai emerged as the top domestic destination for CSMIA in August 2023, while Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi remained the most preferred international destinations. Additionally, CSMIA witnessed remarkable growth in its international sectors compared to the same period last year. Some of the top growing international sectors in the month of August included Munich (MUC) which recorded an impressive 150% increase in passenger traffic, followed by Hanoi (HAN) with a remarkable 138% growth. Istanbul (IST) also saw a significant rise of 110%, while Nairobi (NBO) and Ho Chi Minh (SGN) witnessed an impressive growth of 99% and 96% in passenger traffic respectively vs Aug 2022.

The Independence Day weekend in August also witnessed a significant surge in passenger numbers. On August 11th and 12th, CSMIA welcomed 1,50,257 and 1,50,907 passengers, respectively, reflecting an 8.4% growth compared to the average daily passenger count of August 2023 (1,39,661).

In the domestic sector, IndiGo led with 48% market share, followed by Air India with 18% and Vistara with 17%. In the international sector, IndiGo held 22% market share, followed by Air India with 14% and Vistara with 10%. In August, IndiGo began its operations to Nairobi and Jakarta from CSMIA, offering passengers enhanced travel destination choices and convenience.
