China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are in discussions to increase the number of flights between the two countries, with the goal of fostering stronger economic and tourism ties. The current air traffic rights, which allow 56 flights per country per week, have been exhausted, prompting the need for an expansion.
By increasing flight connections, both nations hope to facilitate greater trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. The move comes at a time when China and the UAE are seeking to deepen their strategic partnership and explore new areas of cooperation.
“The enhanced air connectivity will not only benefit businesses but also promote tourism and cultural exchange between the two countries,” said a senior official from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. “We are confident that this initiative will contribute to the overall growth and prosperity of our economies.”
The UAE, known for its world-class aviation infrastructure and rapidly growing tourism industry, is particularly eager to attract more Chinese visitors. In 2023, the UAE welcomed over 1 million Chinese tourists, a 20% increase from the previous year. With the addition of more flights, the country aims to further boost its appeal as a destination for Chinese travellers.
“China is a key market for us, and we are committed to making it easier for Chinese tourists to visit the UAE,” said Khalid Al Zarooni, Director-General, UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security. “We are working closely with our Chinese counterparts to streamline visa procedures and enhance the overall travel experience for Chinese visitors.”
The increased air connectivity is also expected to benefit businesses operating in both countries. With more flights available, companies will find it easier to conduct face-to-face meetings, attend conferences, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
“This initiative is a win-win for both China and the UAE,” said Li Jian, President, the China-UAE Business Council. “By strengthening our air links, we are creating a more favorable environment for trade and investment, which will ultimately lead to greater prosperity for our people.”
As China and the UAE continue to negotiate the details of the expanded air traffic rights, both countries remain optimistic about the potential benefits of increased flight connections. With a shared commitment to economic growth and cultural exchange, the two nations are poised to take their partnership to new heights through enhanced air connectivity.
