Indian travellers are now the sixth largest spenders on hotels abroad ahead of travellers from countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany and even Singapore, according to Hotel Price Index by Hotels.com. On the other hand, Indians are one of the most value-conscious when it came to travelling within their own country and take 12th position when it comes to spending on room nights within their own country.

On an average, Indians spent Rs 6,722 while travelling overseas, compared to Rs 4,136 while travelling within their country in 2010. Travellers from the U.S.A continue to be the biggest spenders when they travel abroad, spending Rs 7,309 on average when travelling overseas. USA travellers are followed by those from Russia and Japan, who spent Rs 7,302 and Rs. 7,093 respectively per night on hotels in 2010.

Singaporeans spend about 38 per cent more at home than while travelling abroad. Similarly South Africans are most savvy spenders on international trips paying 38 per cent less for hotel rooms abroad than while traveling within their country. Abhiram Chowdhry, Marketing Director-Asia Pacific, Hotels.com highlighted the growth in Indian travelling trend stating, “Strong economic growth over the past decade has meant that there are many more Indians with a lot more disposable income. Thus the Indian travellers are emerging as a high spending addition to the world travel market which is evident from the fact that they are more than willing to spend more than many others on their holiday experiences.”

In terms of destinations, New York kept its place as the most expensive overseas destination for Indian travellers after a seven per cent rise took the average nightly rate in the city to Rs 11,686. This was driven by a combination of factors, including the recovery in domestic and business demand in the USA and the strength of the dollar. Singapore showed a big increase with the average prices going up 26 per cent on a year on year basis in that city. However, there were, still some great value destination to be found for travellers who were prepared to shop around as Bangkok witnessed the biggest price fall from Rs 4,557 in 2009 to Rs 4,015 in 2010. Party destination ‘Las Vegas’ was also amongst the best value cities for Indians falling at number 15 at Rs 6,157 making it an attractive proposition for travellers.

The Hotels.com Hotel Price Index is a regular survey of hotel prices in major destinations across the world. The HPI is based on bookings made on Hotels.com and prices shown are those actually paid by customers (rather than advertised rates) in 2010.
