Tourism Western Australia in talks with Vistara & IndiGo for direct air access from India to Perth

With India emerging as a strong partner for tourism and other business sectors, the Premier of Western Australia Mark McGowan has had discussions with airlines namely Vistara, IndiGo and Qantas to start direct flights to Perth. He in India for deliberations with companies across sectors like tourism, education, mining, airlines and liquefied natural gas. "With direct air access Perth will be established as the gateway to Australia considering its geographical location on the Western side of the continent," He was addressing the media in Mumbai at The Trident.

He went on to add, "We are deeply committed to promoting Western Australia in India, and would like to undertake joint marketing activities with airline partners."

On the bilateral front, India and Australia have an Open Sky Policy, and currently Air India is the only carrier that operates direct flights to Melbourne and Sydney. A majority of traffic between India and Australia travels via Singapore and Malaysia. In 2018, Western Australia recorded a growth of 12% with 30,000 visitors both ways across 150,000 trips.

The Premier's visit assumes significance since Australia is hosting the ICC Women's and Men's World Cup 2020. The first match of the Men's tournament will be played between India and South Africa at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist and a native of Perth said, "With direct air connectivity to Perth from India, the turnaround time will be one day which will benefit airlines. With Vistara looking at overseas routes and fleet expansion, Perth would be the right opportunity." He cited the example of the success of the direct flight from Tokyo (Japan) to Perth that is witnessing a good traction, and the same could be replicated on the India route.

Cricket commentator and Friend of Australia, Harsha Bhogle spoke about his experience of touring Perth and commended its vegetarian food options.
