MTDC to make its Matheran resort operational 24x7 on pilot basis

The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) will be extending the Mumbai 24x7 initiative to its own resorts, reports Times of India.

A pilot project will be undertaken at the popular Matheran resort. As part of this initiative, there will be a 24x7 check-in facility, and the restaurant at the resort will operate through the night-not only for guests staying at the resort, but also for people from outside.

An official said that they were also making arrangements for a medical facility that will be available 24x7 for resort guests. "With the 24x7 initiative introduced in some parts of the city, we would like to extend it to some of our popular resorts. In the first phase, we would like to try it in resorts that are close to the city and are generally occupied, so we are starting with Matheran. Depending on the response there, it will be extended to other resorts," said a senior official.

The Matheran resort, located at Dasturi junction, has 34 rooms of varied standards and prices. Officials said that the staff strength at the resort would have to be increased in order to keep it running 24x7.

State Tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray was the driving force behind the Mumbai 24x7 scheme, which was launched in the city from January 24. The initiative is currently limited to certain non-residential parts of the city, like malls and mill compounds. The first few weeks of the initiative saw a lukewarm response, with not a lot of people going out at night and major shopping brands keeping their stores shut after regular hours. (Source: TOI)
