13% spike in foreign tourists after a part of Ahmedabad gets World Heritage city tag

According to the DNA report, a rise in the footfall of foreign tourists to Ahmedabad has been noticed ever since a part of the city got UNESCO's World Heritage City tag. According to a report by Gujarat Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation Limited (GITCO), foreign travellers — who have stayed overnight in Ahmedabad — shot up by 13% in 2017-18 compared to 2016-17.

There is a rise in the number of domestic travellers also. According to data released by the company, in 2016-17, Ahmedabad saw 66,63,000 domestic travellers, which has increased to 74,59,000 in 2017-18, indicating a 12 per cent rise in a year. The data also includes Non-Residential Indians and tourists from other states.

"Number of foreign tourists who have stayed overnight in the city has gone up by 13 per cent in a year. In 2016-17, the number of such travellers stood at 1,22,000, which grew to 1,38,000 in 2017-18," said RM Patel, Chief Consultant, GITCO.

Akshar travels, which arranges heritage walks in the city, has also witnessed a rise in the number of foreign travellers. "Our daily batch of heritage walk sees around 40 per cent foreigners. Also, tourists from other states have shot up since the city got the World Heritage tag," said Manish Sharma, founder of Akshar Travels.

The heritage department of the civic body says they have put extra effort to bring overseas travellers to the city. According to their estimate, they have witnessed a 25 per cent increase in footfall of foreign tourists. "Ever since the city got the prestigious UNESCO tag, the footfall shot up. Earlier, Gandhi Ashram was the popular destination among tourists, now people are also interested in visiting heritage monuments," said Ketan Thakkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, AMC.
