Sri Lanka building new port city to attract tourists

According to a report in The Times of India, four months after the terror attack in Sri Lanka on Easter that claimed more than 260 lives, normalcy is returning to the island nation. In its effort to boost the tourism industry, which is the major source of income for its nationals, the government has taken several steps, including building a port city in Colombo. “We have reclaimed 269 acres from the Indian Ocean to build a new commercial city with a financial district, hospitals, hotels, resorts, water parks and theme parks on the lines of Jumeirah in Dubai and Singapore, which we hope will change the face of Lanka,’’ said an official from Sri Lankan Tourism. A Chinese engineering firm has been entrusted with the ambitious project.

The Lankan government has also exempted the mandatory visa fee for those visiting the country for the next six months. India is among the 48 countries which have been given the visa fee exemption of $35 (equivalent to Rs 2,500) effective August. The government has also announced a reduction in air fares.

The government says it has deployed security forces across the nationin order to reassure tourists that Lanka is a safe destination.
