Qatar looking to increase Indian inbound through its Stopover program

Having recorded 400,000 visitors from India in 2018, the Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) is looking at increasing inbound traction through its Stopover program. Joseph Fernandes, General Manager - India, AVIAREPS, India Representative of QNTC, said, “The Qatar Stopover Program offers hotel stay for USD 40 per person (four-star) and USD 50 (five-star) for guests coming for 12 hours to 4 days. Considering that Qatar offers free visa on arrival to Indian nationals, the Stopover Program would be an attractive proposition for passengers using Doha as a hub for their onward connections.”

He was talking to TravelBiz Monitor at the Mumbai leg of their multi-city trade roadshow that travelled to Delhi and Bengaluru, and saw participation of 15 exhibitors, including Qatar Airways and IndiGo.

The Qatar Stopover Program is designed by Qatar Airways and its destination management division, Discover Qatar, in collaboration with the National Tourism Council.

Moreover, with direct air access, Qatar Tourism is looking at positioning the country on the destination wedding map for Indian clients. “This year, Qatar has hosted 6 weddings from India, and the hotel facilities in the country have the infrastructure and all the elements required to host an Indian wedding. Indians are looking for new and offbeat destinations for weddings, Qatar perfectly fits the bill. The flying time from Mumbai is 3 hours and from Delhi it takes 2.5 hours to reach Doha.”

Qatar ranks first in its per capita in the Middle East and eighth in the world. It offers visa free for nationals from 87 countries, and is a convenient hub for onward US and Europe connections. By end of 2019, Qatar will be home to 124 hotels. Its flag carrier Qatar Airways offers connections to 15 entry points in India.
