ANTO collaborates with Yatra, MakeMyTrip, SOTC to tap FITs in India

Records 8.6% growth in arrivals during 2018
Having witnessed a growth of 8.6% in arrivals and 8.4% surge in overnights from India in 2018, the Austria National Tourist Office (ANTO) has planned to partner with online travel agencies (OTA) to tap the FIT (Free Individual Traveller) segment. “We have started our promotions with Yatra, MakeMyTrip, SOTC etc. mainly to target the FIT travellers. Our online training programme ACTS (Austria Certified Travel Specialists) has large number of certified agents participating from the Indian market. We also conducted a workshop for all the travel agents based in Mumbai to educate them about Austria.” said Christine Mukherji, Director - India ANTO at their annual roadshow in Mumbai.

She spoke about the latest developments made in some of the Austrian destinations. “India is an important contributor to Austrian tourism. We witness families travelling in huge numbers. For India our focus in 2019 would be families, FIT travellers and leisure travellers,” she said.

Mukherji said cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai are their key source markets. “Although Austria is actively engaged with the 3 important cities, we are also interested in Bengaluru, Kolkata and Pune.” She added that Austria currently has 17 visa facilitation centers spread all over India, and the ease of visa facility boosts tourism.

Talking about air connectivity she said that Air India operates direct flights from Delhi. “Direct connectivity is not a major priority for us because travellers can reach Austria from all surrounding points by Lufthansa. For example, travellers flying to Munich can reach Austria within 1 hour, 30 minutes approximately,” she stated.

Thomas Bachniger, Market Management, Vienna Tourist Board, said “Globally, Vienna witnessed 16.5 million overnights and 7.3 million arrivals. Out of this, from India we received 1, 37,000 overnights which is close to 63,000 arrivals.”

In terms of ranking, India is among the top 20 focus markets for ANTO.  “India is a focus because of the trend of families travelling together. We have noticed that Indians love to travel in large numbers, but we have also received equal number individual travellers and honeymooners,” he said.
