GTDC starts Colva beach development work

According to a report in The Times of India, five months after laying the foundation stone to develop Colva as an iconic beach, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation has started the work. The Union government had allotted INR 11.67 crore for Colva beach beautification, which is a part of the INR 100 crore sanctioned to develop the coastal belt from Pernem to Canacona. Foundation stone for the project was laid on July 10 last year.

Colva and Benaulim beaches attract lakhs of tourists throughout the year, but in recent times visitors have complained of garbage on the beach and lack of facilities like changing rooms and toilets. The development project includes beautification of the road leading to Colva beach, improvement of existing traffic islands, pathways, drainage system, construction of toilet blocks with changing rooms, four-wheeler parking for 80 vehicles and two-wheeler parking for 327 vehicles. The project will also include construction of parking facility for 54 buses, play equipment for children’s play area, landscaping and illumination. However, the cleaning and beautification of the Colva creek is not part of the project. Tourism minister Manohar Azgaonkar said INR 10 crore will be allotted for it in the near future.

GTDC engineer P Badami said the corporation has already started work on the drainage system and beautification of pathways and traffic islands.

He said works worth INR 2.2 crore have been taken up at Benaulim beach. The works include pathways, seating facilities at the beach, four wheeler parking for 102 vehicles, 152 slots for two-wheelers, landscaping and illumination.
