India’s travel and tourism sector creates more jobs than most other sectors: WTTC

According to The Benchmarking Report 2015, published by World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the 23 million jobs directly generated by India’s travel and tourism sector are more than those generated by education, financial services, mining, chemicals manufacturing, and auto manufacturing combined. The Report compared travel and tourism to a number of other industry sectors in India.

According to the report, travel & tourism has strong linkages to other sectors through its supply chains. For every direct job in this sector, nearly one additional job is created, which is greater than in both the agriculture and education sectors.

The travel and tourism sector is expected to grow at an annual average of seven per cent over the next ten years, outpacing the total economy growth of 5.2 per cent per annum.

David Scowsill, President & CEO, WTTC, said, “This report highlights the importance of travel and tourism to India’s economic growth. The industry not only sustains jobs within its sector, but every job in the industry creates almost one other job elsewhere. It is therefore crucial that India keeps on investing in infrastructure and human capital to sustain the demand for talent in the travel and tourism sector in the country and continues its efforts on visa facilitation.”
