With double-digit growth India emerges as Australia's fastest growing market

India has emerged as the fastest growing market for Tourism Australia clocking double-digit growth in arrivals and spends. According to Tourism Australia, arrivals from India to Australia grew by 15% for the year ended October 2017, with an influx of 294,000 visitors compared to the same period last year thereby making it the eighth largest inbound market for Australia.

India ranks as the seventh largest source market for Australia in terms of expenditure recording around 16% growth as compared to the previous year. Indian visitors spend AUD 1.43 billion (approx INR 7,200 crores). In the year ended December 2017, 70% (211,500) of the Indians travelled to Australia for leisure, 39,000 visitors travelled for business, 19,800 for employment, 18,100 for education and 14,100 for other purposes. Among travellers under leisure, 75,900 visitors were on holiday and 1,35,600 were visiting friends and relatives.

According to Nishant Kashikar, Country Manager - India & Gulf, Tourism Australia, “India is among the fastest growing markets with its increasing youth population and disposable earnings. We have observed that Indian are travelling at much younger age and the frequency among these young travellers is increasing hence making India the fastest growing outbound market in the world.”

“The key markets for Tourism Australia are Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru which contribute 47% of the total business while the likes of Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Punjab, Kerala and Chennai contribute 30% of the total. We are targeting 3,00,000 Indian visitors by the 2020,” he added.

Commenting on the Great Australian Airfare campaign, Kashikar said, “We will continue to partner and work closely with our airline partners to accelerate market demand and create more enticing opportunities thereby encouraging Indians to visit Australia.”

Kashikar added that Australia has been growing in appeal as an aspirational destination for Indian travellers. Tourism Australia will continue to intensify its efforts, with an aim to bring India within the top five inbound markets for the country by 2025.
