We want Indians visiting South America to include Columbia in their itinerary: Columbian Ambassador to India

Conceding that the awareness about Colombia and its diverse landscape, culture and heritage is still very low in India, its Ambassador to India, Clemencia Forero Ucros said that the endeavour of the Embassy is to encourage Indians going to South America to discover Colombia by including it in their travel itinerary. The Ambassador said that the Embassy in India and ProColombia, the promotion body for trade, tourism and investment of Colombia, are ready to support any initiative to promote Colombia as a tourism destination for Indians travelling to South America.

“In Colombia, India is quite well-known and thousands of Colombians come to India to experience its culture, heritage, etc. On the contrary, Colombia is less known here in India,” said Ambassador Clemencia during a brief interaction at the Colombian Food Festival at the Taj Mansingh in Delhi recently.

She said that the main six cities of Colombia are quite safe now and “people will find them very interesting”. Equating with India, she said that Colombia is multicultural and diverse in terms of landscape. “What makes Colombia unique is its rich biodiversity. We are a first rank biodiverse country as Brazil.” In terms of landscape, she said that Colombia is country comprising diverse regions like the tropical coasts on the Pacific and Caribbean, the vast plains of Bogota, the Andes mountains, the coffee region and the Amazonian region. The walled city of Cartagena, a World Heritage site, on the Caribbean coast is a sought-after tourist destination, she said.

When asked about the current traffic from India to Colombia, the Ambassador said that it has been largely business travel because of the presence of substantial number of Indian companies in varied sectors like agro-chemicals, automotive, consultancy, business process outsourcing, etc. working in Colombia.  There are over 40 Indian companies who have investments in varied economic sectors in Colombia.

Talking about air connectivity, Ambassador Clemencia said that Bogota is easily accessible through Madrid, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, etc. As far as visa is concerned, Colombia is a visa-free destination for those who have a valid US or Schengen visa. However, the Ambassador said that the Embassy is ready to support any request for visa from Indian travellers.
