Visit Finland to launch ‘Rent a Finn’ global campaign from next month

To look at promoting Finland as a year-round destination in India
In order to offer an opportunity for discerning travellers to ‘live like a local Finn’, Visit Finland, the national tourism marketing agency of Finland, will be launching a unique campaign – Rent a Finn – next month.  The global campaign intends to offer travellers an experience-driven stay with a local Finn host and experience the nature, culture and understand the secret of happiness of the world’s ‘happiest nation’. The national agency has selected eight hosts from different spots in the country for the programme, and the guests will be selected on the basis of an online selection process. This was mentioned by Sari Hey, Head of PR & Media – Asia & Australia, Visit Finland and Sara Sodhi Juneja, Country Head – India, Visit Finland during an event organised at Finnish Embassy yesterday.

The campaign will be launched globally from March 18, they said.

Finland had received 33,500 Indian visitors last year registering a growth of 15%. The destination has witnessed sharp growth in Indian overnights in the last couple of years. They are expecting to touch 1 lakh overnights from India in 2019.

Speaking on the occasion, Nina Vaskunlahti, Ambassador of Finland to India, said that Finland and India enjoy a very good relationship, and would be celebrating 70 years of diplomatic ties. There will be numerous events including commissioning of opera co-produced by Finnish and Indian artists, she said.  “Finland is one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries; almost 80% of the land is covered by forest and 10% by water.  So it’s no wonder that tourists are blown away by the sheer beauty of the Finnish landscape,” she said.

When asked about connectivity, Dr Jukka Holappa, Commercial Counsellor – India, Finland Embassy, who is also in charge of trade and investments, said that their “primary aim” is to see Finnair launch new routes to India other than the existing Delhi – Helsinki service.  “We have rights available with us.  But Finnair fleet is currently occupied with the China market.  However, they are adding four to five A-350’s to their fleet this year, so probably they might look at opening new routes to India sometime next year,” he said.

“Finland received a very warm welcome in the India market with the arrivals growing by 15% in 2018. We are focusing on developing Finland as an all year destination for Indians with the four unique seasons.  With midnight sun in the summer, and the ephemeral allure of the Northern Lights in the winter, Finland possesses a wealth of rare beauty and a truly distinctive ambience,” said Sara.
