Austria, Slovenia close borders with Italy amid escalating coronavirus cases

As a dedicated measure to contain the spread of coronavirus, Austria and Slovenia have closed their borders with Italy, according to news reports in various global media.

Austia has closed its borders to people coming from Italy, except if they have a health certificate or self-isolate. Sebastian Kurz, the Federal Chancellor, announced a new package of measures on Tuesday in an attempt to slow down the spread of the coronavirus.

Austrians who are in Italy are also being called home so they can be placed in quarantine.

Slovenian Prime Minister Marjan Sarec announced on Tuesday that he has ordered the closure of the border with Italy. "This is a necessary measure if we want to have the situation under control," he tweeted, adding that he gave the order to the health and interior affairs ministries.

The government said that the border would be closed as soon as technical and administrative conditions are met, adding that cargo transport would not be limited so as not to cause damage to the economy.
