Korean festival aims to target Indian tourists

‘Korea Festival 2019’, which was announced by Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO), has offerings for regular tourists as well as the travel trade in India. It was held at High Street Phoenix. The festival aims to popularise South Korea as a destination among Indian travellers by giving a glimpse into Korean culture.

A ‘Korea Movie Weekend’ had also been organised by Korea Culture Centre at PVR Juhu.

Korean bands including In2it, AlexandrA, Queen and Gamblers Crew are the major attractions for the festival. The festival also has designated zones like the Hallyu Zone, Performance Zone, Experience Zone, VR and Calligraphy Zone, Photo Zone, Game Zone and Redemption Zone.

Speaking about the festival, Park Jeong Ha, Executive Vice President, KTO International Tourism Division, said, “We are very pleased to host the Korea Culture and Tourism Festival in Mumbai, the centre for the economy and the tourism industry in India. The festival will allow Indians to feel and experience traditional as well as modern Korean culture.”

The number of Indians travelling to South Korea is on rise. Around 100,000 Indians visited South Korea in 2018 and the numbers are growing at an average of 10-15% per year, he said. “With our New Southern Policy being emphasised by President Moon Jae In, we are positive that India will be one of the important markets to drive growth in terms of tourist numbers.”

Park said the bilateral relationship between India and South Korea is based on a long history of friendship, and has grown in various aspects. Indian travellers are exploring the world like never before. Quoting a report published by Integreon, a research organisation, he said, “India is among the fastest-growing outbound travel markets, and is expected to be among top five as per international tourism expenditures by 2025.”

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between KTO and Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI) to boost outbound tourism from India to South Korea. A book, titled, ‘Indian Friendly Restaurants in Korea’, was released on the occasion.

Kwon Jong Sool, director, Korea Tourism Organisation, said India has always been an important country for South Korea. “We believe there is tremendous untapped potential between these two countries. We will continue to invest in promoting Korea for Indian travellers and this MoU reinstates our attempt in doing so. We look forward to a long-standing partnership with OTOAI in making Korea the first choice for Indian travellers,” he said.
