Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty - A Hospitality Jewel on the crown of the Queen of Arabian Sea

Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty has not only redefined the hospitality landscape of the city of Kochi but also of the whole of South India within a short period of its opening. An urban resort with unparalleled leisure and convention facilities, the third luxury Grand Hyatt brand in India has already started enticing both global event organisers and Leisure travellers from within the country and the core GCC markets. P Krishna Kumar who visited the hotel recently was spellbound by the location right on the lap of Queen of Arabian Sea, its imposing and majestic architecture, world-class facilities, etc.

The imposing mellow-yellow coloured façade of Grand Hyatt caught my attention as the cab turned left from the High Court junction to the Gosree bridge that connects the mainland to the islands on the other side. As the cab moved closer and closer, the majestic curved glass structure started giving me a feel of a large ship. Soon the car crossed the security gate and climbed the elevation to the lobby area of the hotel.

The lobby of the hotel is quite straight in terms of its design and doesn’t intimidate guests or visitors at all. Because of the high ceiling and the floor to ceiling glass walls, the lobby looked fully lit up with natural light. Might be due to the ownership’s strong linkages with the Arabic world, the dominant colour in the lobby is gold which soothes the eyes. Spread over 26 acres, the urban luxury resort on the backwaters has 264 rooms, 38 suites, four villas. Offering a hotel within a hotel experience to guests, there is ‘Grand Club’ floors on two floors with exclusive access to boardrooms, lounge, etc.

MICE at its height:
Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty is a MICE hotel in all its glory. The convention part of the hotel really stands out and the facilities at the Lulu Bolgatty International Convention Centre is truly making the development one-of-its-kind not only in the Southern part of India but on a pan India. Two large ballrooms – Vembanad and Liwa – with large foyers, and so many smaller meeting rooms around, the convention facility has already started beckoning big international and national events into Kochi. Vembanad and Liwa can host events as big as 3000 and 2000 pax capacity respectively.

Game-changer for Kochi:
The hotel has already hosted large events like Australia World Symphony Orchestra, World Billiards competition, Destination Weddings, etc. “This hotel has been a game-changer not only for Kochi and Kerala but the whole of South India. Because of our large convention and events facilities, the city has started getting queries that it could not have dreamt of in the past,” said Girish Bhagat, General Manager during a brief chat. Kochi will be hosting a large International Doctors’ conference early next year because of the convention facility. More than 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the conference. “People are bored of Goa, therefore a lot of destination weddings have also started moving to Kochi with the opening of the property,” he stated.

The opening of Grand Hyatt has had a positive impact on the profile of the whole city. The whole micro business environment of the city, like other hotels in the city, tourism service providers, logistics providers all started sharing the pie of business, Bhagat says. “As a city, Kochi has started pitching for global events,” he observes.

Fine Mix of Leisure & MICE:
While Conference, Meetings, Destination Weddings would be a major business driver for the hotel, the management wants to focus equally on the FIT Leisure aspect because of Kochi’s unique location. “We offer enough and more option for FIT travellers. We expect good leisure business from the regular feeder markets within India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc. and also the GCC countries because of Grand Hyatt’s brand presence in those countries and our ownership, Lulu Group,” the GM said. The hotel offers fabulous opportunities for water sports in the backwaters, sunset cruises, cycling tours to nearby fishermen villages, etc. for the guests.

Great F&B repertoire:
Grand Hyatt Kochi has limited but at the same time grand F&B offerings. The Malabar Café is an all-day-dinning modern café that offers flavoured interpretations of traditional Kerala and South Indian recipes fired with Malabar spices. Colony Clubhouse & Grill is a classy Old-world grill on the hotel’s rooftop with a hint of local flavour with Colonial and Arab influences, and an emphasis on seafood. This dining destination is the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail of choice and gourmet cuisine with some mesmerising backwater views of the Vembanad Lake. Thai Soul is inspired by authentic Bangkok street food, original recipes, iconic flavours, and brilliant cooking. This vibrant poolside restaurant embodies a relaxed modern spirit for sharing and casual dining.

The hotel’s F&B outlets have already become a talk of the town because of its unflinching focus on “authenticity,” says Hermann, Executive Chef, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Kochi, an Austrian who has been associated with Hyatt for almost 30 years.
