Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), with the aim of promoting Mauritius as a destination which caters to all segments of travellers and not just limited to leisure, is taking several initiatives to attract new traveller segments from India. Among these initiatives, the focus on attracting MICE travellers from India is the top priority for MTPA in the current fiscal. Arvind Bundhan, the newly appointed Director of MTPA, said that out of total Indians travelling to Mauritius, 12% visit for MICE activities which give them a reason to target this segment, and also clear the air that Mauritius is only a beach destination.

Notably, Mauritius welcomed 87,000 Indians in 2017 with year-on-year increase of 11% and the target is to reach 120,000 Indian arrivals by end of 2020. Bundhan stated that Indians on an average spend around USD 350 during their stay in Mauritius, with an average length of stay of six to seven nights.

Bundhan said that Mauritius is an affordable luxury destination and has hotels and convention halls which can host events and conferences with group size as big as 2,000 pax. Moreover, the Mauritius Film Promotion Authority is also working actively to attract potential film producers and directors from India by providing various incentive schemes.

Elaborating on the initiatives to attract new segments from India and particularly the MICE travellers, Bundhan said that MTPA’s four-city India roadshow held from August 30 to September 4, 2018, across New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Mumbai is one such initiative through which 27 suppliers from Mauritius interacted with over 500 travel trade members and made them acquaint with the latest destination offerings.

Vivek Anand, Country Manager – India, MTPA, said that apart from roadshows, MTPA India also organises workshops for travel agents to keep updated about the latest developments. He informed that in last four years, MTPA India has undertaken 24 educational workshops.
