We want to build on the growth momentum in tourism: KJ Alphons

KJ Alphons, Minister of State for Tourism (I/C), Government of India, has said that tourism has been on a growth trajectory in India and has registered a growth of over 15% in the 2017 calendar year, which is well above the global growth of 3.9%. He said that the challenge before India tourism is to sustain the growth momentum and further build on that in the New Year. The Minister was speaking after launching the first Digital Calendar for Incredible India in New Delhi.  

The Incredible India Digital calendar application enables users to know about the events and festivals happening in India on the go. It is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms. MoT also launched the physical calendar which contains pictures of key monuments and structures shot at night.  

Later speaking to the media, Alphons said that the new Tourism Policy for the country is getting ready and will be launched soon. He also said that work on the five Tourism Zones announced in the last budget is being worked out. Revealing details of the Special Tourism Zones (STZ), a top of the Ministry official said that the project is currently in “Challenge mode” where interested States will be asked to bid for the STZ project with their project plan, incentives, etc. The plan will be placed before an empowered committee before selecting them.
