Rejecting reports of cancelling the first Champions Boat League (CBL) which was postponed due to torrential rains and subsequent flood calamities in the State, Kadakampilly Surendran, Tourism Minister, Kerala said that the rescheduled CBL races will commence on August 31 with the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Vembanad Lake in Alappuzha.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, the Tourism Minister said that the government or the Tourism department never thought of cancelling the mega event as more than a year of preparations have gone into it. The reports surfaced otherwise were baseless, he said. “We cannot cancel the event altogether as lot of preparations have gone into it with participating teams fully ready for the much- awaited event. It is going to be in the same lines of Indian Premier League,” he said.

He expected CBL to give another reason to celebrate God’s own Country and become a major tourism product of the State in coming years. The CBL will take place at 12 different places spread over 12 week-ends, he added.

The Minister said that the damages to the Tourism infrastructure and the sector as a whole is yet not assessed. However, the Minister clarified that the floods has had no impact on the key tourism destinations or tourism assets in the State.
