‘We are elated to complete a year in Indore’

Indore Marriott Hotel is the largest 5-star Hotel in Madhya Pradesh in terms of rooms and meeting space, which covers an incredible 55,000 sq. ft. of meeting and banqueting space. The property has completed the first year of successful operations in November hosting nearly 1,200 events. Devesh Rawat, General Manager, Indore Marriott Hotel spoke to TravelBiz Monitor on the journey so far.

Q How did a Tier II city like Indore receive an international 5-star brand like Marriott?
Indore has been awarded as the cleanest city for two consecutive years in a row. It is a developing city and one among smart cities selected by the National Government. Even though Indore is being tagged as a tier II city, the Infrastructure, Education, Technological advancement, Art & Culture, Trading, and Finance far exceed the expectations. The market here is still untapped and has lots of potentials.

As an emerging market in India, Marriott International did its study to understand the Indore market and found that Indore has great opportunities with the highest percentage of disposable income and thus has the potential for two of their brands - Indore Marriott Hotel and Fairfield by Marriot.

Q What kind of difference Marriott was able to create or deliver to the hospitality landscape of the city since its opening a year ago?
We are elated to complete a year in Indore. It has been a pleasure to see the property buzzing throughout the year. Over the last one year, Indore Marriott Hotel has become a preferred getaway destination

offering Indian hospitality with a global flair. Indore Marriott Hotel being a full-scale 5-star property and one of the most prevalent brands carries a lot of expectations. Free Wi-Fi, Lady Chauffeur facility, best in class restaurants, the Great Room Bar, Mobile Check-in, Experience Specialist and contemporary I-pad controlled Rooms to name a few are some of the Service standards which brought a difference in the hospitality landscape of the city.

Q What kind of modulations did u bring to the brand architecture/product design to make it relevant to a city like Indore?
The concept of Marriott brand architecture/product design is to ‘Think Global, Act local’ and has set its standards in terms of design and architecture. Prior to its entry into the city of Indore, Marriott had done its research with reference to Indore’s culture, art, architecture, food, and climate. Room / Restaurants / Public Spaces have been designed as per Marriott brand standards. However, few modulations were made. For instance, Indore being the foodie city, we launched our All Day Dining Restaurant as Indore Kitchen. The city has many people having an inclination towards Thai and Sichuan cuisines and thus we launched our first specialty restaurant- One Asia. Q What kind of challenge that intl. brands face maintaining the set standards, especially in terms of quality human capital, timely procurements, etc.?
Marriott Hotels have very high-quality checks and standards that have to be maintained across all properties. In respect to the same, it was a bit challenging for Indore Marriott Hotel to be at par with both, Indore culture and Marriott’s standard. We had brought in many products from Delhi & Mumbai hence; our procurement of operating supplies involved the huge cost for the quality.

Marriott brand has 108 properties in India and this helped in human capital for Indore Marriott Hotel as well. The Hotel got much human capital moved from other cities to Indore, who wanted to come back to the city. Indore Marriott Hotel has a high level of women workforce being hired externally and internally as well.
