By TBM Staff | New Delhi

SAMHI, leading Indian hotel investment company, will deliver 10 out of the 14 Holiday Inn Express they signed up with Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) by end of this year. These 10 hotels are currently under product retrofit across major cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Great Noida, Pune, etc. The remaining four are new constructions and will join the portfolio as they get ready.

IHG and SAMHI jointly announced the opening of the first Holiday Inn Express Hotel under their agreement in Sector 50, Gurugram in Delhi NCR yesterday. The 205-room hotel was closed down in March this year for renovation and completed the brand makeover in record five months’ time.

Speaking to media at the launch, Ashish Jakhanwala, MD & CEO of SAMHI said that the product has been redone completely and nothing from the earlier product has been carried on. “We have redone the entire public areas and guest rooms. The whole product is new,” he said. He added that the hotel has a fantastic location, and through the renovation the product has been made superlative to make it appealing to the new business travellers.

Jakhanwalla said that the company will be spending around INR 100 cr on renovation of the 10 hotels and all will be reopened after renovation with Holiday Inn Express branding by the end of this year. “It was a tough decision to close down 10 running hotels for renovation and revamp,” he said.

When asked about SAMHI’s decision to tie up Holiday Inn Express brand, Jakhanwalla said that as an investor, they look at “market opportunity” first, and then the right product and right brand to leverage that opportunity. “Our locations are hi-density business locations. Business travellers today give value to efficiency over luxury. Holiday Inn family is known for their efficiency with very high brand recognition globally,” he said.

Earlier, addressing the media, Kenneth Macpherson, CEO – EMEAA, IHG said that Holiday Inn is an important growth engine for IHG in markets like India. He said that the partnership with SAMHI will deliver 2,000 rooms to their inventory in India to become one of the largest mid-market hotel operators in India. He said that this will ultimately help them to capture a growing business travel segment in India. He said that all the 14 Holiday Inn Express hotels are “next generation representation of Holiday Inn Express” brand purposefully customised for Indian business traveller.
