Two new European carriers started their India operations on the same day promising enhanced connectivity to Europe and to forward points within Europe and to cities in the US. While Air Italy, a full-service Italian carrier with hub in Milan started their Milan- Delhi operations with weekly three frequencies, with a second city addition in Mumbai next week with same frequency, WOW Air, an intercontinental low-cost carrier from Iceland landed in Delhi connecting Keflavik to Delhi with three frequencies a week.

Both the carriers are hoping for a long-haul in India riding on ever-growing tourism outbound from India as well as the increasing trade and business relationships between India and Europe. Addressing the media after the first Air Italy flight touched down in Delhi, Rossen Dimitrov, Chief Operating Officer of the Airline said that the airline has been on a route expansion mode throughout the year, and Delhi is the fourth international route to open this year, with Mumbai fifth. He said that the company would be deploying their Airbus 330-200 fleet with 24 Business Class and 228 Economy seats on India route.

“We are an airline which continues to challenge the European skies, and a brand built around customer delight,” he said. He said that with the new launch travellers from both the countries will be able to avail a range of new services on Air Italy’s domestic and international connectivity options through their hub in Milan, Italy. For Indians, Air Italy will offer excellent onward connectivity to the US destinations of New York and Miami. The airline will also be commencing flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles in the US from April, 2019 and Toronto in Canada in the summer schedule, he said.

Similarly, WOW Air, which announced their India schedule well in advance, landed in Delhi offering a low-cost option to Indian travellers on an inter-continental route. The Iceland-based carrier, apart from connecting India with Iceland, promises to offer a low-cost option to connect to 13 points in the US for Indian travellers.

“Within a minimum connecting time of 2 hr and 25 minutes, we connect to 13 points in the US from our hub at Keflavik to Indian travellers,” said Kiran Jain, MD – India for Wow Air. “WOW might be a new brand in Asia, but is known and quite popular airline in the Europe, the US, and Canada,” she said.

Speaking on the USP, she said that while it is a low-cost affordable airline, it also gives the control to the customers to pay for what they want. Apart from the fare, everything else comes as extra, and the customer can choose what they want and pay accordingly. Calling WOW, a digital and social airline, Jain said that the rates are highly transparent with lot of promotional offers to grab from time to time.
