Out of the four Mini Conclaves, two conclaves specific to tourism sector will be held in Tehri and Nainital on August 7 and August 10 respectively. While the Tehri conclave will discuss tourism and wellness, the Nainital Conclave will deliberate on investment opportunities in film shooting and tourism.

Talking to TravelBiz Monitor in Delhi, Satpal Maharaj, Minister of Tourism, Government of Uttarakhand said that they will also organise an Ambassadors’ Meet in Delhi on August 30 to present the vast investment potential in the tourism sector in the State. The Tourism Minister said that the mega Investment Meet in October will only have a limited focus on Tourism like infrastructure development, ropeways, etc., while the Mini Conclaves will showcase untapped potential in areas like adventure tourism, culinary tourism, etc., in the State before the investors. Talking about Tehri, the Minister said that land is available for infrastructure development around Tehri lake. “Tehri itself is a major investment destination,” he said.

The intention is to create infrastructure for adventure tourism activities like skiing, heli-skiing, etc., in the Himalayas and develop the destination into a hub for winter sports activities. The Minister said that the government will ask the French government support to extend the ropeway at Auli to Gorson, so that the visitors can get the panoramic view of Himalayas. “We will also ask France to open a unit of the Data Centre at Chamonix at Auli,” the Minister said.

When asked about the eco-sensitive character of the State and the need for better balance in sustainable tourism, the Minister said that everything associated with Indian tourism is in the State, especially the Ganges and the Himalayas and therefore government is committed to bring in strict guidelines for all sorts of nature and adventure activities. “We will submit the report soon so that the ban on adventure activities are lifted by the courts,” he informed.

The Minister said that Tourism is one industry which can deliver highest benefit to the State as a service provider. Therefore, the priority is to create right infrastructure at all destinations. When invited his attention to bad road infrastructure, the Minister said that road infrastructure has improved and roads which were existed only on paper were rediscovered to strengthen accessibility.

When asked about the proposal to lease out guest houses and accommodation infrastructure under the two Vikas Mandals of Garhwal and Kumaon, the Minister said that there is a proposal to hand over the management of loss making units at remote destinations to private parties, but no decision has been taken so far. He said that private hoteliers are better equipped to market and promote such infrastructure than the government agencies.

Uttarakhand Tourism has also finalised schedule for domestic roadshows to promote the State in the domestic market. These road shows will be held in Bengaluru (August 22), Hyderabad (August 23), Ahmedabad (August 24), Mumbai (August 29) and Delhi (August 30).
