Tourism is a major driver of socio-economic development: Rajnath Singh

Second annual Paryatan Parv celebrations kick-started at India Gate
Inaugurating the second annual Paryatan Parv, a nation-wide celebration and exercise to sensitise the people about the value of tourism, organised by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India at India Gate lawns in New Delhi, Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister said that Tourism is a major driver of socio-economic development in the world and events like Paryatan Parv will help in providing much-needed momentum to the sector which has the capacity to generate employment in the society and the country.

 Talking about the commitment of the government to the tourism sector, Singh said that the government has been providing all kinds support to keep the momentum going for tourism growth in the country. He cited the e-Tourist Visa facilities being extended to foreign tourists to bring ease of travel. He said that the government is committed to see the contribution of the Tourism sector to the GDP growing from the current 7% to at least 10% in the coming years. Singh also spoke about India‚Äôs unique positioning in the natural and cultural aspects. India is only country in the world where all religions of the world co-exist. India, he said, is the living example of true cultural diversity.

 Speaking on the occasion, KJ Alphons, Minister of State for Tourism, said that India is the fastest growing tourism economy in the world today with over 12% annual growth in terms of visitor numbers and nearly 20% growth in tourism receipts. However, he said that the government is not contented with the growth. 

 Talking about Paryatan Parv and its mission, the Minister said that the objective is to sensitise people about the value of tourism and make them understand that they are equal stakeholders in the business of tourism.

 Ministry of Tourism, Government of India in partnership with other departments of the government and State governments and private stakeholders will organise around 3,000 activities across the country as part of Paryatan Parv, Rashmi Verma, Secretary Tourism said. 

Cultural events, food and handicraft stalls, etc. have been set up in the India Gate lawns and the celebration will go on till September 27.
