Plastic usage to be banned within 100 m radius of protected monuments: Union Minister

Speaking at the inaugural of the Paryatan Parv, a week-long celebration of tourism to sensitise people about the value of tourism, at the India Gate Lawns, Prahlad Singh Patel, Union Minister with Independent Charge of Culture & Tourism, said that usage of single-use plastic will be banned in the 100 meter radius of all protected  monuments in the country.  He said that usage of single use plastic will be eradicated in a phased manner from the all the departments and agencies associated with the Ministry of Tourism & Culture. 

Paryatan Parv is to propagate the message of ‘Dekho Apna Desh’, with the objective to encourage Indians to visit various tourist destinations of the country and also to spread the message of ‘Tourism for All’. The Paryatan Parv has 31 stalls of Central government ministries as well as from States and UTs. 59 food stalls representing cuisines from all over the country have also been setup.  

Speaking about the various initiatives of the government under Prime Minister Modi, Patel said that the government is quite confident that it will be able to achieve the targeted growth of doubling the tourist numbers as well as revenue well before 2022 deadline set.  The Tourism Minister reiterated that the government and the stakeholders of the travel and tourism industry should work together to address and remove all the mis-perceptions about the India as a destination.

Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Information & Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar spoke about the rich natural and cultural beauty of the country.  He said that the government decision to open up five islands in Andamans for tourism will give great impetus to tourism in the country.  He said that people will stop going out of India with the development of these islands and more international tourists will come to India. 

A multimedia exhibition organised by Bureau of Outreach Communication of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was also inaugurated by Union Ministers, Prakash Javadekar, Dharmendra Pradhan and Prahlad Singh Patel.

Seven MoUs under the ‘Adopt a Heritage’ scheme was signed with private stakeholders on the occasion.
