MoT-appointed private consultancy to recommend steps to strengthen ICPB

ICPB to organise 11th ‘Conventions India Conclave’ in Kolkata from August 29 to 31
A private consultancy agency appointed by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India which is currently undertaking a survey on the MICE sector in India, will recommend ways to improve and strengthen the India Convention Promotion Bureau’s (ICPB) structure in the country. ICPB is a public-private partnership under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India mandated to drive MICE into India.
The private consultancy will analyse the working of the Bureau and suggest reforms to bring financial stability to it including restructuring of the same. Speaking to TravelBiz Monitor, Chander Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB said that the agency is interacting with ICPB's present and past members, conference organisers, etc., to get hold of ICPB's working thereby analyse the Bureau's strength and weaknesses. Further, the Consultancy will suggest ways to improve Bureau’s financial status which at present is handled through memberships, events and conferences handled by the Bureau.

Mansharamani further stated that the agency will also be examining economic and social impact of any conference, conclave or convention in a destination. He said that the study will be beneficial for ICPB especially for the financial aspect of the Bureau as the recommendations for monetary gains will help ICPB improve its functioning internally as well as externally.

When contacted, a Tourism Ministry official while confirming the appointment of the private consultancy said that it will study “the best practices available” in other countries and recommend “required restructuring” in the system. “They have been given six months’ time and expected to submit the report by July end,” the official said.

ICPB will be organising its flagship event ‘Conventions India Conclave’ in Kolkata from August 29 to 31, at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, which will see participation of around 150 to 175 buyers including more than 40 International buyers. Revolving around the theme of the event ‘Scaling New Height – Building for the Future’, the focus area during the Conclave will be on how ICPB can enhance its activities and compete in the international market. Working towards the same, ICPB will organise its first ever International roadshow in Europe during the last week of June 2018.

Mansharamani said that there will be representatives from ICCA, and CEOs from other European MICE Associations at the Conclave to share the international best practices while bidding for international conferences.

He also stated that proposals for opening new Chapters have been sent to seven more state governments which are lifetime members of the ICPB.  These include Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, etc.
