ICPB seeks subvention scheme for Indian corporates and associations to make India a preferred MICE destination

ICPB constitutes 10 expert committees to activate the Bureau
India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB), the nodal body under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India entrusted to promote India as a preferred convention destination, has sought more liberal support from the government to drive MICE tourism into the country. In its first interactive meeting of the New Year held in Delhi, ICPB had placed a wish-list before the administrative Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, to be pursued with the PMO.  Among other demands, the Bureau has sought incentives including subvention scheme for corporates and key associations to bring more conferences and conventions into India.

The wish-list which was put forth by the newly elected Vice Chairman of the Bureau, Amaresh Tiwari included targeted promotion of 5 Indian cities to be brought into the top 100 list of MICE cities in the world by 2023; infrastructure status to convention centres and hotels to enable long term fund flow to create world class infrastructure; creation of a suitable sub-brand for MICE promotion under the Incredible India master brand to make communication streamlined; provision of IGST for DMCs, PCOs on hotels to provide ITC for companies not registered in a particular state; empower Indian missions abroad to promote India MICE stories; etc.

Tiwari said that the primary focus of the new ICPB board is to introduce new activities to deliver value to members. 10 new committees have been formed with dedicated tasks and responsibilities. For the first time in the history of ICPB, a research and publication committee has been formed and will be working closely with IIMs and IITs for MICE related research.

Stressing on the importance of unstinted government support for promotion of MICE, Girish Kwatra, Hony Secretary, ICPB said that governments invests a lot of money behind Associations to bring international events in major MICE destinations. Many countries have liberal subvention schemes to support MICE tourism, he said.

Making a presentation on ‘Indian MICE - What next?’, Ashish Gupta, Consulting CEO, FAITH also supported interest subvention demand, and an ICPB administered corpus to support a systematic and professional participation in international biddings for global events.

Gupta also asked ICPB to first create a vibrant domestic MICE base before venturing out and bidding for international MICE events. We need to create compelling reasons for Indian corporates to look within, he suggested. He recommended incentives like 200% weighted deduction in IGST for Indian corporates to hold their events and conferences within India. Apart from creating a MICE sub-brand within Incredible India in the lines of Macau, Malaysia, etc., to make the communication powerful and compelling, Gupta also recommended co-bundling of MICE with Yoga, Backwater, Himalayas, Festivals, etc.

ICPB also launched their newsletter, MICE Pulse, on the occasion.
