Curfew declared in Sri Lanka after serial blast in religious centres and luxury hotels

In the wake of serial blasts on Easter Sunday in the island nation, Sri Lanka, the government has imposed curfew across the country. More than 200 people have been suspected to have lost their life and more than 400 people have been injured in series of blasts that occurred in different places in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa.

Blasts ripped through churches in the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa at approximately 8:45 a.m. as worshipers were gathering for services. Explosions also struck four hotels in Colombo, the nation’s capital, police said. An eighth blast occurred under a flyover within the city. All of the explosions occurred between 8:45 and 9:30 a.m.

The landmark hotels which were targeted included Shangri-la Hotel Colombo, Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Kingsbury Hotel and New Tropical Inn.

As per reports, around 27 foreign tourists were also lost their life in the serial attacks.

The attacks by extremist elements was the first major attack after the island nation recovered from the civil war a decade ago. Ruwan Wijewardene, Sri Lanka’s minister for defense, said the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. He said that the culprits behind the attacks were identified and will be taken into custody soon.

World leaders condemned the attack. US President Donald Trump in his message expressed condolences and assured all help to Sri Lanka. India strongly condemned what it called a “ghastly and heinous act” and said it stood with the people of Sri Lanka “in this hour of grief.”

Tourism industry also expressed solidarity to grief-stricken island nation. Madhavan Menon, Chairman and Managing Director, Thomas Cook India Group (including SOTC, TCI and Luxe Asia) condemned the “act of violence” in Sri Lanka. “We unequivocally condemn the acts of violence in Sri Lanka and stand in solidarity with the people of the Island nation. Our customers across Thomas Cook India, SOTC and TCI currently on tour are accounted for and safe, as also our people across our Thomas Cook Sri Lanka teams and our subsidiary Luxe Asia. We are in constant touch with our customers for reassurance and to ensure their safe return to their home stations. Our prayers are with the people of Sri Lanka in these trying times and we stand with the Sri Lankan government and Tourism Board in our joint efforts to ensure traveller safety.”
