Globus family of brands charters sailings on Ganges Voyager to tap high-end Indian inbound

Having recorded three times more traction in 2018 over the year ago for its inbound business in India, Globus family of brands has chartered a vessel ‘Ganges Voyager’ for 2019. The idea behind this is to tap high-end and affluent inbound visitors to India for river cruises under its Avalon Waterways vertical.

Talking about this during his recent visit to Mumbai, Scott Nisbet, President & CEO, Globus family of brands, said, “Inbound travel to India is doing incredibly well for us particularly from the US. We probably saw three times more traction in 2018 over 2017 for the inbound business. India is growing in popularity and it makes perfect sense to bring the river cruise proposition here. The Ganges is a well-known river and intrigues experienced travellers worldwide. Currently, there are not many options available in India for river cruises and therefore we decided to be early to bring river cruise experience.”

Elaborating on the Ganges river cruise offering, he said, “We have chartered the vessel to offer 7 days round trip from Kolkata, cruising Northwards in the state of West Bengal. We were intending this product to be more apt for the Western market, but travellers here also can get an intimate experience of a river cruise. Currently, we are not pushing this product in the Indian market. For 2019, we have already sold 75% since travellers abroad book much in advance compared to their Indian counterparts.” The bookings have largely been driven from the US, UK, Canada and Australia markets.

Ganges Voyager has an inventory of 25 rooms with a capacity of 56 pax and 36 crew members. “This is a high-end luxury ship and guests have the opportunity to experience Varanasi, West Bengal, the Golden Triangle and scenic villages on the route.”

Replying to a specific question on plans to consider ocean cruise packages, Nisbet said, “We have no plans to venture into the ocean cruising segment. River cruising perfectly suites our portfolio since our products is about experiencing a destination.”

Globus family of brands sells its products in 15 markets, and India features among the 6 major ones. “Cosmos is our top performing and popular brand in India. We have seen a growing interest from Indians for travel in Asia, South Pacific, South America and Australia beyond Europe. In fact, we have noticed Indians moving away from multi-country tours of Europe to more regional destinations like Iceland, Scandinavia, Croatia, etc. In 2018, Scandinavia was our number one selling destination in India.”

For 2019-2020, the focus for Globus family of brands is to cross-sell brands like Globus, Monogram and Avalon to Comos’ guests.
