Anandpur Sahib Heritage Foundation to host Khalsa Games from April 12-13

To commemorate the 350th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji, the Anandpur Sahib Heritage Foundation will be organising the 3rd edition of the ‘Khalsa Games’ on April 12-13, 2017. This is an annual sporting festival that will culminate with the celebration of Baisakhi. The significance of holding the Games is to mark the day when Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji on Baisakhi day in 1699 declared the formation of the Khalsa Panth (the pure), an army of soldier saints to combat tyranny and oppression in any form against humanity.

Sodhi Vikram Singh, Managing Trustee, Anandpur Sahib Heritage Foundation and a descendant of the former ruling family of Sri Anandpur Sahib introduced ‘The Khalsa Games’ coinciding with Baisakhi, which within a span of three years has become a much awaited sporting calendar event of the Foundation. The two-day event will highlight the tradition of martial arts and the traditional sports of the Punjab.

On April 12-13, 2017, the Khalsa Games will begin with a display of the traditional Sikh Martial Arts and Gatka by 4 district level teams, followed by a Men’s Inter-District Kabbadi tournament, followed by a tug of war district level competition, a show of horsemanship and feats of strength and courage preformed by the rural people of the Punjab. Crowds of pilgrims, visitors, eminent players, dignitaries and local administration will be present in large numbers to encourage the participants and celebrate the birth of the Khalsa panth during Baisakhi in Sri Anandpur Sahib.

The Foundation aims to further strengthen the sporting traditions of the Punjab by inviting participation of highly competitive district level teams in the ‘Khalsa Games’. The Foundation’s objective is to strive for a ‘drug free Punjab’ & to encourage the youth of the state to re-establish Punjab as a premier sporting state in the country. In addition to traditional sports like Gatka and kabbadi the organisers will endeavour to constantly introduce new sporting events to create a healthy sporting competition during the festival of Baisakhi with the aim to strengthen the proud spirit of Khalsa in the upcoming generation.
