‘We provide our visitors a complete experience’

Dr A Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, speaks to Sumit Jha about creating an atmosphere that provides a complete holiday experience for an Indian traveller
Dr. A Karl MootoosamyQ. Mauritius has been a popular tourist destination among Indian travellers, particularly honeymooners. What steps are being taken to increase interest and awareness among other tourist segments, like families, from India?
Mauritius is a unique and unforgettable destination. Over the years, the destination has grown more popular with tourists around the world, for its reputation as one of the most luxurious destinations. We have it all, and for all. Whether you come for your honeymoon, or with your family, or for MICE, or business, we provide visitors a complete experience.

The island nation has long been associated with destination weddings and is regularly voted as one of the best places to get married in the world. The Indian traveller, in recent times, has discovered the potential of this destination for weddings, and we have hosted some high-profile Indian weddings here. We want to go beyond that and make Mauritius a destination that provides a wholesome experience to families, with respect to comfortable accommodation, cuisine, spas, children’s clubs, and golf activities. We are also looking to cater to adventure-seekers with activities like snorkelling, kite surfing, deep sea fishing, sky diving, scuba diving, hiking, surfing, and cycling.

In order to promote tourism among the growing affluent class in India, we are creating special promotional events, targeting families. Our upcoming shopping festival is a step towards this objective. In partnership with the private sector, we have developed new service offerings to cater to the needs of visitors who are looking to find new and diverse experiences. We have noted that our cultural diversity and peaceful safe environment have proved most attractive, and thus want to ensure that historical sites are promoted in itineraries.

Q. The number of Indian travellers to Mauritius is expected to grow at ten per cent in the current year. How important is the Indian market for Mauritius Tourism?
India has always been an important source market for us. Over 61,200 Indians visited Mauritius last year, registering a growth of 6.8 per cent over 2013. The number of travellers coming from India has been constantly increasing this year, and we are confident that the number will cross the ten per cent year-on-year growth mark. A major increase in the leisure segment has been noted along with high-end weddings, and MICE business from India.

Q. What are your plans with regard to engaging the Indian travel trade in the promotion of Mauritius?
In order to promote the destination among travel agents and tour operators in India, we are organising a series of roadshows (across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru) in the third week of August. Besides, there are various specific promotional programmes being introduced to attract more Indian travellers. To increase awareness of the offerings of Mauritius among the Indian travel trade fraternity, MTPA – India recently organised a six-day FAM trip for travel trade magazines
