ITM will plug the missing link in India’s tourism chain: Nakul Anand, Chairman, FAITH

Organisers promise stringent scrutiny in buyer and seller selection at the second edition
As India’s tourism industry under the stewardship of the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH) is getting its acts together to hold the second annual edition of India Tourism Mart (ITM) in Delhi between September 23 and 25, its Chairman Nakul Anand said that while India has been transforming itself into a travel destination in the past decade with a highly professional industry, a Travel Mart to showcase and promote India was a missing link in the chain. With IMT, he said, the industry has been able to plug that hole. Anand was speaking to the media to announce the schedule of the second annual edition of the ITM in Delhi.

Anand said that substantive improvement has happened in the travel and tourism infrastructure and facilitation in the country over the decade. Among the best five airports in the world, India has two. Similarly, baggage clearances, immigration infrastructure, visa facilitation, etc. all improved in the country. India as a travel destination has distinguishable assets. He said that the focus of marketing should now shift to intra-regional travel. South and South East Asia itself is a USD 30 billion worth travel market. Even if India manages to carve out 10% of that market, it would convert into a big opportunity, he said.

Suman Billa, Joint Secretary – Tourism, Government of India, said that the government wanted the travel mart for India to be industry-led and government supported, and it proved to be the right model and format for a successful event. He said that the government is supporting through its outreach to India missions abroad and India tourism offices to bring the right buyers for the Mart. He said that two key ethos of ITM are its inclusivity and the principle of equity, so that it can support the cause of small and medium suppliers in the country.

Subhash Goyal, General Secretary, FAITH and Chairman, ITM 2019 Organising Committee, said that 150 registrations have already come in from international buyers and 150 more are expected to be finalised after scrutiny in the coming weeks. More than the number of buyers, the quality is important, he said.

Chander Mansharamani, Vice-Chairman, ITM 2019, also reiterated that they are meeting regularly to make the selection of buyers and sellers transparent and foolproof.
