Time to adopt ‘Multi-Skill’ approach

Skilled manpower is of great importance today in the world of tourism and hospitality. Unless one is not skilled in his/her job one cannot add value to clients’ need and in turn to one’s personal growth.

I would say we need to take skilling a step further and inculcate and educate the youngsters and employees and ourselves with multi skills.

Multi skilling is the attainment of supplementary task-related skills and knowledge, which empowers an individual to perform a broader range of tasks and functions within any organisation. It also indicates practical ways in which existing employee workforce can be rationalised through optimally utilising them so that employee costs can be operationalised, thus leading to greater efficiency and greater profits.

Managers and senior professionals also require multi-skilling in both technical and generic aspects of work. They should possess the knowledge and skills that enable them to function effectively including people management, persuasion, communication, relationship-building, planning and organising, analysing information, decision-making skills, commercial acumen and flexibility.

We will need to have employees who can not only perform single job functions, but who can assume cross-functional roles which should have service quality provision and most important language skilling.

Multi skilling is invaluable in the tourism and hospitality industry since it is a very cost-effective method to assist businesses to face the many employment challenges that are posed in the current global industry. Multi skilling does away with departmental boundaries and promotes and fosters a spirit of teamwork, which leads to better levels of service quality provision. It also aids the industry to come to grips with the issues of insufficiently qualified and unskilled employees. It is suggested that multi skilling can make employees more flexible and efficient and able to cope with the variety of functions relating to a matured service industry. Employees are empowered with additional skills and capabilities which allow them to cope within what is often a volatile environment. It will also to be an extent, serve as a shield given the inordinately high employee turnover rates that are exhibited in the industry.

To sum it up I would reiterate that one should have the knowledge and multi skills to execute the job which will make one always achieve success.
