Breaking the Glass Ceiling

disha Women, unlike a lot of other industries, have traditionally been a strong part of the workforce in the travel & tourism sector in India and its different verticals like aviation, transportation, hospitality, etc. Despite this, for a large part of the history, there have been very few women in leadership roles in the industry. However, this scenario has been changing rather rapidly in the past few years. A closer look says, there has been an emergence of a number of women entrepreneurs who have launched their own successful ventures. Some of them even fall in the category of ‘disruptors’ and therefore enjoy a first-mover advantage. They have emerged as headstrong visionaries not only for the business they run, but also lead by example and inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs as role models. Hence, we decided to dedicate the Volume II of our 11th Anniversary Issue to ‘Women Entrepreneurs’.

Each of the 12 women profiled in this issue is a role model in her own right, having reached the position through sheer hard work and perseverance. Through this issue, we have reflected on their professional journey and how they have managed to reach the positions of power that they hold today. Some of them have managed to create businesses hitherto never heard of, and others gave an altogether new direction to their existing business. All this, is a reflection of ‘fearless’ thinking and charting out their own territories. These women have been witness to all the eventful, tumultuous and progressive developments that the tourism sector has undergone in the past few years, and have only emerged stronger. Some of them have even fought personal adversities to give a new meaning to their careers. Although this list is inclusive, it is, however, not exhaustive. Therefore, either by paucity of time or oversight, we may have left out some of the women entrepreneurs.

The one quality that is common of the women entrepreneurs in this issue is their undying spirit to the cause of Indian travel and tourism. We will take you through their path-breaking initiatives, which I am sure would make an interesting read to gain perspective on their work, and its ripple effect on the industry at large.
