Adversities into Opportunities!

It’s the election season, and the election fever has already on its way of reaching a crescendo. Election seasons are generally considered a ‘dampener’ for business by trade and industry in this country as governance comes to a grinding halt for couple of months at least. From a travel and tourism industry perspective, elections, this time, are largely a concern of outbound travel businesses than inbound, as the travel season in India is set to close shortly. Even the outbound industry is also not overtly worried as elections will get over well in time for not just for ordinary folk, but for the leaders to have a good sabbatical in one of the exotic destinations abroad after a gruelling election grind in the Indian summer heat! As of now, only spoke in the wheel seems to be the soaring airfares due to shortages on the supply side.

But the question is why not the travel trade in the country convert adversities into opportunities. There has been hardly any effort on the part of the travel industry to en cash on the ‘Election Tourism’ in one of the largest democracies in the world. While probing the net, I could find only one website which genuinely promotes Indian Elections as a tourism product.. The promoters boast of having hosted over 5,000 election enthusiasts from countries as diverse as China to UAE as well as CIS countries during the 2014 General Elections. That’s not a bad beginning, at all!

Elections are all about selecting leadership. Matured leaderships can really convert adversities into opportunities and bring a big image makeover for the country and its people. We have seen one such a shining example in New Zealand recently. When a terror act shaken the country, the young Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern didn’t make long speeches, but took the whole country with her to console the victim’s families. She became one of them which generated overwhelming adulation from all spectrums of people and leaderships. The kind of positive mileage New Zealand as a destination derived out of that extraordinary act on the part of its top leadership is more than any destination brand ambassadors could deliver to the country. Let’s hope the example PM Ardern set will change the mindset of existing and future leaderships in countries like ours while dealing with tragedies and mishaps are directed at dividing the society!
