A NEW INDIA: EVER OPEN FOR BUSINESS (& LEISURE)

The saying that ‘times do not change, we do’ might very well have been coined for India. As the fastest growing, and the third largest economy of the world, it is coasting at a frenetic pace, displaying a perceptible change that augurs well for both inbound and outbound tourism.

With new records being set almost every year in rising tourist arrivals over the last eight years, India is the talk of the tourism business the world over.

The biggest partners of the fast growing inbound tourism are the European travellers who possibly account for almost half of all inbound visitors. Even as business travel grows, leisure is the reason for 55% visits. Experts from WTO opine that India has shown improvement across the board and particularly in goods market efficiency, business sophistication and innovation.

It is today effectively one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, making travel within the country smoother and seamless. The value proposition for niche tourism markets in India has grown exponentially - creating a lucrative business opportunity for tourism trade.

Not only the natural and cultural resources that have always stood out for the sheer variety and richness, an enabling business environment, strong travel and tourism policies and fast growing infrastructure in the country has boosted travel by creating comfortable experiences for visitors. For example, India’s niche markets like medical tourism will touch USD 9 billion in a few years.

Just last year the fruits of positive policy change could be seen in the record-breaking increase in foreign inbound visits in just two months of the liberalisation of visa regime with e-visa.

As a frequent traveller across the world I have personally seen the increasingly comfortable responses to safety and health issues of not only travellers. but travel industry professionals as well.

The colours and the sheer experience of the country is an unforgettable experience. In a world of uncertainties and apprehensions, the India story is a steady narrative of hope, delight and opportunity.

The strength of its tourism pull, on full display at ITB and other travel marts is testimony indeed.
