South African Tourism in talks with other African nations for joint promotions in India

Kick starts four city-India roadshow from Mumbai with a target to reach 100,000 visitors
In order to promote outbound from India to the larger Africa region, South African Tourism (SAT) is in talks with the Tourism Boards of Mauritius and Seychelles as well as airlines for joint promotions. Talking about this, Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head, MEISEA, South African Tourism, said, “I am engaging with Mauritius Tourism to create a tale of 2 cities (2days in Mauritius and 5 days in South Africa) and Seychelles Tourism as well as airlines, who are critical partners in this initiative. When South Africa wins, Africa wins; it’s all about in Africa for Africa by African through India.” She was speaking at the first-leg of the four-city South African Tourism roadshow in Mumbai that kicked off yesterday at Trident, Nariman Point. The roadshow will travel to Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi in the coming days.

As part of its aggressive strategy to make South Africa as a top-of-the-mind destination among Indian travellers for outbound, SAT will be promoting new products and regions beginning with its annual trade fair, INDABA. “I have set a target to achieve over 100,000 tourists from India for the next financial year, which is do-able… I have learnt that the period of INDABA is an extremely busy one for trade partners in India. Therefore, we will take some partners to INDABA, while there is a plan to take 50-100 operators post the event to showcase the known as well as the unknown experiences and destinations. The new products and regions that we will showcase beginning INDABA include KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo side of Kruger National Park, Western Cape, and wine towns of Stellenbosch, Wellington, etc.”

Maropene Ramokgopa, Consul General of South Africa in Mumbai, said, “In an effort to ease visa procedures, the Consulate of South Africa is working in close association with South African Tourism. We are collaborating to accredit select travel agents and tour operators to allow fast-tracking visa applications from preferred partners.  We ensure a quick turnaround time of 5-7 days which is a lot shorter than some of our competitors.

For the period of January to September 2018, Mumbai contributed 45% to the overall Indian arrivals to South Africa while Delhi was at 17.4%, Chennai at 7.7% and Kolkata at 1.6%.

According to Nkani, this will offer SAT an opportunity to open the market for new players to gain their share of the growing Indian outbound pie for long-haul travel. The roadshow this year is the 16th edition of annual event in India, witnessing participation of 6 new players.

In November 2018, SAT recorded a 25% increase in tourists after a lull, while the total spends as of June last year by Indians has surged by 20%.
