Obituary: Praveen Chugh, President, TAFI passes away

Travel industry veteran Praveen Chugh, the current President of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), passed away with a massive heart attack last night in Delhi. He was declared dead at around 11.40 pm.

Chugh was in Mumbai yesterday for the managing committee meeting of TAFI, followed by an extra ordinary general meeting. He was based in Delhi and took a evening flight home. Upon arrival at Delhi airport, Chugh suffered a heart attack while he was in the washroom. Efforts by doctors at the airport to revive him yield no results.

Born on October 16, 1955, Chugh was serving his second consecutive term at the helm of affairs at TAFI. He was also the Vice Chairman of the World Travel Agents Association Alliance (WTAAA).

Recently, EbixCash had appointed Chugh as COO of Agency Sales for Via.com, having acquired the assets of his company, Business Travels Private Limited.

Chugh has spent more than four decades in the travel sector, not only providing leadership and guidance to the industry, but also in creating some of India’s largest travel companies. He is credited for having led one of the travel industry’s most successful growth stories TSI-Yatra.

Commenting on his untimely loss, Rajat Bagaria, Jt Secretary, TAFI, said, "Praveen was a genius and way ahead of times. Despite our different views, I respected his intelligence and overall persona. His undying spirit to conquer new heights, and his dream for TAFI will be nurtured.  I pray for the departed soul of my friend who was a great leader."

Biji Eapen, President, IAAI, said, “It is a shocking news; Chugh was an asset to the industry. Despite our differences of opinion, we always shared mutual respect. His death is a collective loss to the entire travel fraternity in India.”

Jyoti Mayal, Honorary, Secretary General, TAAI, remembers her friend Chugh as a wonderful person. "Praveen was a great friend, and is it commendable that he has acheived new heights in his life from humble beginnings. We would meet reguarly to discuss industry issues and I consider his passing away as a personal loss."

Subhash Goyal, Founder & Chairman, STIC Travel Group of Companies said, "It is  most shocking and extremely sad to learn about the passing away of my dear friend Praveen Chug. I spoke to him only day before yesterday and just can’t believe that he is no more. He was a pillar of strength not only of TAFI but also of FAITH and the entire Travel and Tourism Industry.He always looked at the positive side of things and was a source of inspiration to all of us. We pray to God to give strength to his family and loved ones to bear this irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace."
