Induction of more MAX airplanes will enable SpiceJet to expand internationally: Ajay Singh

In an interaction at the ongoing CAPA India Aviation Summit in Delhi, Ajay Singh, MD, SpiceJet said that the airline company will be able to fly more international routes this year with the induction of new Max carriers into their fleet. The company has started inducting latest Max airplanes towards the end of 2018 which are 20% fuel efficient and 30% least expensive in terms of engineering and maintenance, he said.

Singh stated that the airline would be inducting 20 new airplanes into the fleet this year.

The strategy of the company is to stay away from highly competitive markets and focus on increasing yields by at least 5 to 10%.

He asked airline operators to show some discipline and abstain from dumping capacity as well as rates to be profitable. Singh expressed hope in the way Indian states are competing among themselves in creating favourable environment, especially by reducing the taxes on ATF. He cited the recent case of Kerala govt reducing the ATF from 28% to 5%.

Currently SpiceJet’s 27 % capacity is deployed on international routes and this, he said can grow further to more than 30% in the coming years.
