Indonesia hopeful of reaching 7 lakh visitors from India in 2019: Consul General

Indonesia is hopeful to achieve a target of 7 lakh Indian tourists in the coming year. The country saw 485,000 Indian tourists in 2016, and they are optimistic about achieving the target through the promotion of Indonesia’s culinary art, said Ade Sukendar, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia, Mumbai. He was speaking at the first Indonesian Food Festival in Mumbai which took place on December 7-9, organised by the Consulate of Indonesia.

The festival aimed to promote authentic taste of the Indonesian cuisine prepared by the Chef Bera Martomo. It also showcased the Indonesian cultural performance, produced by the officials from a music academy from Indonesia, using their traditional musical instrument made up of bamboo, Angklung.

Speaking exclusively to TravelBiz Monitor, the Consul General, said, “We are presenting the Indonesian cuisine as well as our traditional music using bamboo in India. Indonesia has a lot of Indian influence in terms of its food, religion, people, etc. In the modern time, the leaders of both countries are trying to improve the relations of the countries. Of course, not many Indians are aware about Indonesia and its offerings and vice versa as well. Also, India has higher education facilities and the IT sector is very strong here. So I hope, we will see a lot of our students coming to India. Moreover, we have plans to improve the bilateral trade and tourism.” He further mentioned about the commemoration of the 70th year of their diplomatic ties with India. They are hoping to attract more tourists after the commemoration, from and to the country.

With direct flights from Mumbai to Bali, three times a week and ease of visa, Indonesia aims to improve their trade and tourism sector with India, said Sukendar. He added, “Indians mostly travel to Bali because they feel at home because of the similarities in making of food, friendly people and lot of vegetarian restaurants opening up.”

The Consul General stated that Indonesia is optimistic that its culinary promotions will help tap the vast economic and cultural potentials between the two countries.
