Finland hopes to touch 1 lakh overnights from India this year

With consistent double digit growth in Indian inbound to Finland in the last couple of years, VisitFinland, the official tourism agency of the Scandinavian country, is hopeful of touching the one lakh-overnight mark by Indian visitors this year. Although India is not among the top 10 source markets for Finland, the country’s tourism board recognises India as “one of the fastest growing” markets in terms of visitor overnights to the country.

Speaking to TravelBiz Monitor, Jukka Holappa, Commercial Cousellor and Country Head for India & Sri Lanka of Business Finland, the government agency overlooking export promotions, investment activities, tourism, funding relations,  said that there has been 45% increase in Indian overnights to Finland last year and they are hopeful of maintaining a consistent growth of 20% going forward as well.
The official said that Indian visitor overnights to Finland is expected to touch 1 lakh in 2018.  “45% growth is not sustainable because of the connectivity issues.  20% is what we are happy with,” he said,  “Finland is the topmost tourism destination of the world today.  Lapland gets sold out in winter.  Therefore, there are capacity issues as well,” he added.

“We are not looking at doing mass market campaigns in India,” Holappa said when asked about the priorities since they activated the VisitFinland office in India in the beginning of the year.  He said that the Tourism Board will focus on working with the travel trade in India to promote the destination. “We will work with best travel agents whether traditional or online,” he said underlining the focussed marketing intent of the tourism board.

Holappa said that the Indian MICE travellers is a focus segment for Finland and they have started seeing considerable group movement from India in the last couple of years. He also said that wedding travellers is another potential segment which they would like to tap after evaluating the facilities available to host Indian weddings in Finland.
