SpiceJet likely in talks to buy A330neo planes

As per an Economic Times report by Anirban Chowdhury, low-fare carrier is in talks with Airbus to buy its A330neo wide bodied planes, said two people in the know, indicating that the airline is firming up plans to fly long-haul international routes such as Europe.

Earlier this month, a team of six top executives at the European plane-maker flew down from its headquarters in Toulouse, France to meet the senior management of SpiceJet, led by Chairman Ajay Singh, at its office in Gurugram, near Delhi. This was the second of such meetings in as many months, said one of the people cited above who didn’t want to be named. Neither SpiceJet nor Airbus could be reached for comment.

The people cited above didn’t specify the number of planes being considered by SpiceJet. The A330neo is list priced at USD 260 million (INR 1,872 crore) and will be pressed into commercial service later this year by TAP Air Portugal. It can have close to 300 seats in a two class — economy and business — configuration.

SpiceJet has been, for a while, toying with the idea of purchasing wide bodied aircraft to start long haul operations.

The airline has 36 Boeing 737 planes and 22 Bombardier Q400 jets in its current fleet. It has a pending order of 155 Boeing 737 Maxes and 24 Q400s (down from 25 as the first of the order was delivered last week). The first of the ordered 737 Maxes will be delivered later this week.

Additionally, the airline has purchase rights for another 50 Boeing planes that it can upgrade to the wide bodied Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes, which will now be rivalled by A330s. It has also has options to buy another 25 Q400s from the Canadian aircraft-manufacturer. SpiceJet needs to add capacity on domestic and international routes. (Source: Economic Times)
