Munich Airport celebrates Silver Jubilee Anniversary today

Munich Airport celebrates its 25th Anniversary on May 17, 2017. By May 2017, the total number of passengers arriving, departing, or catching connecting flights at Munich Airport since it opened will top the 700 million mark. The annual traffic volume of more than 42 million passengers per year has more than tripled since the opening year of 1992, and the number of take-offs and landings has doubled to approximately 400,000. Over the past 25 years, Munich Airport has handled around 8.5 million flights.

The latest milestone in the airport's dynamic development was the announcement of Lufthansa’s decision to station 10 Airbus A350 jets in Munich. Serving long—haul routes with these advanced wide body jets will result in enormous reductions in fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

The airport's official opening a quarter of a century ago, on May 17, 1992, marked the start of an impressive success story. Since then, the once mainly regional airport has risen to take its place alongside Europe's leading air transportation hubs. It is now the first and only hub in Europe to boast "Five-star Airport" status.

"Being honoured as the first five-star airport in Europe by the London-based Skytrax Institute is a thrilling accolade for our service and the high-quality passenger experience we provide. Our goal must now be to maintain our excellent quality standards and continue expanding the services we offer travellers," said Dr. Michael Kerkloh, President and CEO, Munich Airport.
