Kannur International Airport will work as a model for future airport development in the country: Suresh Prabhu

Kannur International Airport in Kerala dedicated to the nation
Speaking after dedicating the Kannur International Airport in North Kerala to the nation, Suresh Prabhu, Union Minister for Civil Aviation said that the model of Greenfield airport development Kerala has successfully completed both in Kochi In the past and Kannur now can work as a model for future airport infrastructure development for many states in the country to adopt and replicate.  

He said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is in the process of finalising a policy for PPP development of airports and Kannur airport could offer the right template for that.  

The Union Minister said that Kannur International Airport will open a new gateway for Kerala’s future development. “Kerala has the highest potential for growth that can be realised only by creating world class infrastructure……Connectivity brings prosperity,” the Minister said.

 Appreciating the facilities at the airport, Prabhu said that the Kannur airport is one of the largest greenfield airport in terms of area, one of the best in class of construction and future technology. Citing the number of Keralites settled in different parts of the world, the natural beauty of the State which beckons travellers from across the globe to the State and the states rich spices exports, he said that the State is “the right candidate” for highest number of international airports in the country. 

Declaring the airport open, Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala recollected people who worked through the decades for the realisation of the airport. He specially mentioned the names of Late Capt. Krishnan Nair, Chairman of Leela Hotels , PVK Nambiar among others who advocated an international airport in Kannur. He also highlighted the support received from the Centre and different agencies to get the project opened as per schedule. 

 RN Choubey, Civil Aviation Secretary called Kannur International Airport a “shining example of co-operative federalism” and a “jewel in the crown” of North Kerala. Number of operations to both Middle East and domestically to different cities in India will start over the next one year. Air India Express will commence daily operations to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, similarly four weekly operations to Doha, Riyadh, etc. GoAir will start operations to Muscat, Damam, etc.  

The first Air India Express flight from Kannur to Abu Dhabi was flagged off today morning marking the beginning of the scheduled operations from Kannur.
