Dabolim airport to get in-line baggage scanning

According to a report in The Times of India, in a bid to enhance passenger convenience at airports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to have inline baggage scanners ready by October 2019 to ensure that passengers at Goa International Airport face fewer hassles while flying out of Goa. BCH Negi, Director, Goa Airport, said that Air India will man the x-ray scanning machines for check-in baggage and AAI will pay the government- owned airline on a per flight basis. “Passengers can drop off their bags for check-in and the baggage will be remotely scanned. The big x-ray scanning machines presently kept inside the airport will be removed so more space will be available inside the airport,” said Negi. “It will also give us space to create a self check-in zone inside the airport which will allow a passenger to check in and directly proceed to the security zone.”

Negi pointed out that passenger footfalls at the airport are all set to hit 9 million passengers by March-end, with around 85% being domestic air passengers. This was one reason why AAI decided to look for ways to decongest the airport by facilitating a smoother passenger flow at the airport. At present, departure passengers have to first stand in a separate queue near one of the handful x-ray machines installed near the entrance of departure gate. Then the passengers have to stand in another queue at the check-in counter of their respective airline. “Once this in-line x-ray baggage system will be operational, passengers have to just go check-in counter, handover the baggage and that’s all. This will help in reducing congestion at the airport,” he said. Currently AAI has installed 15 self check-in machines at various places inside the airport.
